[00:01:00] It is. I have got the frickin' swamp butt, the fever swamp butt of all get outs. I think other countries are even blaming America for how hot it is. Oh boy. That's not a joke. That's actually a real thing I saw today. I can't believe it. But that does lead into our topic today. But before we get into that topic, we do have some Goosebumps news for everybody. We've got some new items coming up.

[00:01:30] Yeah, so there's a couple things that are coming out in the next month or so. Number one is that kind of the Goosebumps 90 show has been everywhere. The rights have been handed out everywhere. Now, as far as July 1st, you're going to be able to go to Paramount Plus and see every episode. They're not leaving anything out. It's all four seasons are streaming on Paramount Plus. So if you don't have the DVDs or the VHS tapes or anything like that, then you should be able to go to Paramount Plus.

[00:02:01] This will be going out on the 3rd. So it should be live right now for you to go watch every episode of the 90 show. The next thing that we've got coming up is on July 11th is Hallmark is releasing a collector's edition of the Haunted Mask ornament. It's like the newer reprints, like the 2000s, 2007 reprint book, but with the Haunted Mask sticking out.

[00:02:31] So it's pretty inexpensive, isn't it? Like $17 or something like that? No, it's actually a little pricey. Is it? But don't get me wrong, it's a licensed ornament. And yeah, it was like $22.99 last I saw. Yeah, that is a little pricey. So for an ornament that's kind of pricey, I think your price would have been worth it if they would have put it in one of their premium lines. Like they, some of them have sounds or lights, but they could have made the eyes light up for the Haunted Mask.

[00:02:59] That would have been sick and worth the $22.99 for the regular buyer. But being Goosebumps nerds that we are, I am a hundred percent buying it because it's Haunted Mask. Yes. And it's the very first Goosebumps ornament that they've done. So I'm hoping it's not the last. I would love for them to do like a whole wave of these. I'm getting, I'm getting two, one to have on display.

[00:03:21] Uh, and then one that I'm hoping is going to start like a Christmas tree, uh, where I can do like a Goosebumps themed Christmas tree. So, uh, definitely buy it because I would like to have more of them. Show them that, that, uh, Goosebumps is not dead. Um, I just wish they would have used the original nineties color, like cover colors. Yeah. I feel like most of the merchandise now is going back to that two thousands look. I don't like, yeah, you don't like it.

[00:03:52] I've never liked the reprint colors like that. They put with Tim's art. The originals are just unbeaten, man. They're good. Like they're good. They're classics. It was lightning in a bottle at the time and should have just kept it as it was. Uh, but yeah, so Haunted Mask ornament July 11th. Uh, if you're wanting it, I don't know how many they made. Um, I don't think it's that limited, but definitely get it while you have the chance to.

[00:04:20] Uh, and then the next thing is all the way in August, uh, on August 3rd, we have the next house of shivers book, uh, which is what we do at night. It's the one that has like the crow on the front. Um, so that one is coming out on August 3rd. And then the last thing to round out, at least what we know is releasing this year is the stay out of the basement graphic from Maddie Gonzalez, um, is on October 5th.

[00:04:46] So originally that was supposed to release around the same time as the house of shivers book. Um, I, it got pushed back. I saw today on Barnes and Noble that the, the release date is now October 5th. So those are the things that we know that are coming up, uh, in goosebumps from this year's perspective, at least. Uh, I know that for sure next year, um, there's another house of shivers book that's coming out.

[00:05:12] And then, uh, we should be getting the next wave of tots figures next year. So, oh, hopefully. Yeah. Yeah. That's tentatively tots figures will be coming out. Yeah. We'll see. I'm hoping they do. Cause man, let's I like the new wave. I don't know why the design choice on the horror like that, but I'm, I'm still looking forward to the whole line.

[00:05:41] Oh, for sure. Yeah. And I still, I still want to, I still want to Tim Jacobus build a figure in a RL style. So I don't know why they haven't done that. Like, I'm pretty sure they'd both give them their, uh, likeness rights to do it. I know Tim would cause you know, he's a whore. So he puts his stuff out there for everybody. I say that confidently because he's not ever going to watch this.

[00:06:07] Uh, Tim loves us, but he, he don't, he don't have time to sit around and watch anything that. You know, doesn't have a basketball or a football or something apparently on it. Um, but you know, with all the goosebumps news, uh, some goosebumps crew news, uh, sadly Hayden will not be there, but I will be at Shelbyville fandom con on August 8th. Uh, Shelbyville's first convention. So Shelbyville, Indiana, it's actually my hometown. In case you wanted to know, don't come find me.

[00:06:37] Don't fucking come to my house. That's weird, but you can come see me at that fandom event. That convention, uh, should be a good time. I did put posts out for it. So if you need tickets or want to know how to get there, where it's at, it is all online. So hopefully I'll see you there. I'm trying to bring a special guest with me. I can't say who yet. Cause nothing is locked in. Um, but if that happens, obviously I will post about it.

[00:07:06] So that's all we got for the goosebumps news. So let's get into our cruel summer. You know, I can't play the music cause of copyright, but it's a good song. Uh, summer scares though. What stories do you want to read when it's hot? Nothing. I want to go inside where there's air conditioning and then you can read something. You sit down or a glass of iced tea. Yeah. By the pool, by the pool's a good one.

[00:07:36] I guess, I guess pool's fine. And just get, get a cozy reading spot with a fan glass of iced tea or, uh, you know, whatever floats your fancy, but definitely find some time to, to get into some books this summer. I guess, are we starting off with the first one? There's, there's so many that Stein did that are summer based beach based.

[00:08:02] Um, uh, I mean, we're only going to go through 10, but there are more. We'll have some. Yeah. Yeah. There's, there's so many, um, you guys probably all know what they are, but we're going to give you our, our 10 recommendations. And we, this isn't like my 10 and his 10. This is just a 10 that we both agreed on that we could say, yeah, no, we can, we could say confidently to recommend this book to people. If you're trying to find a summer read. Yes.

[00:08:30] So none of these are any order, just FYI. Yeah. Yeah. They're not, they're not ranked. This is not a ranked thing. You know, we, you know, do that on occasion, but we kind of noticed we have a lot of overlap at times too. So not to say we won't ever do a top 10 again, cause we definitely will. Um, we just wanted to find a really interesting one for you guys. Yes. Uh, not, not your standard top 10, you know, maybe we'll do a roast of Craig white or something,

[00:08:59] you know, our top 10 least favorite Craig white paintings or drawings. Uh, I think he'd have fun with that, to be honest with you. I think he would too. Ever since we did it with Tim, I mean, I, I, I always love roasting Tim. I started roasting Craig here lately too. I mean, ever since like curse city con and we all met him in person, I realized, you know, you get a feel for somebody's personality that way. So I knew I could joke with him like that.

[00:09:25] I mean, even his birthday post that I made, uh, I don't know if you saw that or not, but it was, uh, he had a good time with that too. Um, but we can't start our list. Uh, if you'd like to start us off, sir. Yeah, I will do. I'll do our honorable, honorable mentions first, get those out of the way. Um, it's only two on the honorable mentions list, but, uh, return to ghost camp is number one, the series 2000 book.

[00:09:55] I know that that can be a little harder to get. Um, so if you do have it, definitely a good read, uh, especially with one of the other ones that are on our list. Um, but then the other one on the honorable mention is going to be the give yourself goosebumps, the twisted tale of Tiki Island. Um, I read that one like one time as a kid and for whatever reason at my elementary school, that book was always like taken. Like everybody wanted to read that book. I don't know why it was so popular here.

[00:10:25] Yeah. Yeah. The cover is really interesting, but, um, yeah, I, I only got to read it once. And I don't remember exactly what ending I ended up choosing. Cause again, this is elementary school. Um, but yeah, I, I remember having a good time with that, that one in beware of the purple peanut butter. I know that that one's not like a great book, but I do remember reading through that one. Um, so yeah, both of those honorable mentions, definitely good, uh, to start us off.

[00:10:52] And, uh, if you're looking for kind of a more difficult to find rare summer read, those two are, are good, good ones to start with. And I will say, I, I'm going to throw in two honorable mentions myself that are not on this list. And, uh, first one is even though you don't really think of it, it technically is a, it's a summer book. I mean, it's about a, it's a backyard adventure, but revenge of the lawn gnomes. I actually enjoyed that one.

[00:11:19] I mean, I actually enjoy the episode a little bit more, um, mostly because I prefer the nineties show overall over everything. I mean, I love the books, don't get me wrong, but the nineties show is special. Uh, and so many good, so many good memories from that. Um, so revenge of the lawn gnomes though, still a good read. And, uh, surprisingly not on this list. Uh, and maybe it's just cause I didn't really think about it until a little later, but werewolf of fever swamp, obviously that is a fan favorite.

[00:11:48] Definitely place takes place in some time. I'm talking about the fever, man getting the fever. Like cure for the fever is more werewolf. Not cowbell. Um, so yeah, I would say those are my two honorable mentions before we dive into our, our list here. Yeah. And definitely give you our recommendations for summer picks will be. So if you're looking to burn your foot in the sand and, you know, get third degree burns

[00:12:17] and have the sun torch your body looking like Sarah Connor when the bomb dropped, uh, that playground, um, you know, I'll, I'll start from what would be number 10 on the list, even though again, we're not going off here, but, uh, Hayden, you have horror land creep from the deep on here. Yes. I actually just reread this one, uh, last October, which is kind of a weird time to read

[00:12:41] it, but, um, creep from the deep, definitely a, an interesting one for the horror land series. Second one in the, yeah. Second one, uh, in the book or in the horror land universe. Um, it kind of surrounds Billy and Sheena. Um, I think it's after deep trouble too. I think it kind of retconned some things from the deep trouble, like original two.

[00:13:06] Um, but it's, it's basically them kind of finding this like pirate island sort of situation and like sunken treasure. Um, so like kind of pirates of the Caribbean vibe, that kind of thing. Uh, it's, it's, I mean, I don't know. We're not ranking these, so it's hard to place it on the list, I guess.

[00:13:35] But, um, it is fun to read it through, especially once you get to the horror land section. If you read through, um, all of the, the parts of these books, like if you haven't read the horror land series, I definitely recommend it. It's, it's kind of where I left goosebumps. Um, you know, whenever I got older is I was reading through the horror land series, made it through the whole arc. Um, and they kind of stopped releasing books after that.

[00:14:01] And so I went through that and then kind of got older and then got back into it. But, um, the horror land section at the end of these books are really fun to read because you're getting like the multiverse crossover between all these characters and, uh, Billy and Sheena meet up with Carly Beth and it's, it's a fun read. So definitely, definitely a good spot on the list. Oh, that's cool.

[00:14:26] See, for me, I never read anything past the year 2000, basically with the exception of, uh, Screaming the Haunted Mask and Most Wanted Haunted Mask. So because they were haunted stories, I had to read them. Granted, it's been a really long time since I read them, but, um, yeah, so that's interesting. I didn't know, uh, I didn't even know Carly Beth made a, an appearance. It's, oh yeah. In that one. Yeah.

[00:14:49] So there, uh, I don't know if it's, it's not in creep from the deep, but there's, as you go through the very ending, cause like the book ends and then you get to the horror land section. So you'll know, once you get to the horror land, I got to find the right page. Uh, typically there will be like a horror land ticket in the book. Once you get to that, you're reading through the horror land story arc, uh, which is, it's

[00:15:17] covering every book in the series and all of the characters interact and meet with each other. Um, so I was Screaming the Haunted Mask number three or four, something like that. There is an interaction with Billy and Sheena and Carly Beth, I believe. So, um, you definitely get like the whole, whole story arc, uh, with it. I know for sure that here, uh, they're interacting with Brittany.

[00:15:48] And who was the other one, which they were from, uh, revenge of the living dummy, which was the first one. So you're getting the interactions with these kids that were all in all these books and kind of overreaching story arcs between them all. So it's, they're fun to read. I enjoy them. Yeah. I remember, um, we, we've talked about the horror land series and sloppy worlds before on here. I have not had much to contribute. I really just need to make time out to read them.

[00:16:17] I mean, I don't own any of them, but I could probably find them online to read at this point, I would think, or maybe I just start collecting them. I mean, I'm still trying to complete my, uh, true firsts of my original 62, which I'm only one book short. Um, what are you missing? Once that's done, uh, I'm missing book number five. Okay. I need to see if I have that for you. Which I don't have a true first of, which is sad.

[00:16:49] Um, I didn't, I thought I did, but after you learn, you know, the whole true first stuff and, you know, just cause it says first printing, it's like, Oh, you think you got it back in the day, but it's like, no, um, but Hey, I'll get it eventually. I mean, it's, it's taken me a while cause I had the original 62 and then I decided I'm going to up my game and then I'm just going to get a true first of all of the original 62.

[00:17:15] Not realizing what kind of a trek that would be for me. Yeah. It's a journey. I just need one now though. So I'm at the finish line unless I decided to get them with like the bookmark to make sure they all have the bookmark and I'll have most of them do, but the ones that don't are like, for instance, um, girl cried monster. Yeah. That one doesn't have the bookmark. Um, but it's so expensive to get it with just the bookmark in there attached when you, when

[00:17:45] you find one. Um, but I'll tell you funny enough, the hardest ones to find were actually, uh, books nine and 10. Like I would not have thought that given the books, but welcome to camp nightmare, trying to find a true first of that. That wasn't in complete shit condition. Yeah. Uh, and the ghost next door, like kind of thought those would be a lot easier, but those were tough finds, man.

[00:18:13] Like that took me a minute. I see some of the, uh, you know, uh, book number five, which I don't know why I keep getting the mummy books all confused, but it's curse of the mummy's tomb. Um, that one, I don't know why maybe it's cause it was one of those early books, the number six, but man, like 60, $70. I'm like, uh, it's hard to pull the trigger. If I'm going to do that, that book better be pristine.

[00:18:43] And the ones I see aren't. So yeah, I'm just holding out. I'll find one. Eventually. Continuing our list. Funny enough. The next one, deep trouble too. Yep. So this one, deep trouble too is obviously based on, um, the second iteration of the books, but the TV show, the episode from the nineties is actually based on this book, even though it shares the cover of deep trouble one.

[00:19:09] Um, so deep trouble too is kind of, it's been a while since I've read this one. Um, but it's kind of like mutating fish DNA kind of thing, like making fish people. So, um, definitely an interesting read. Like I said, it's been a while. So Nick, if you've got input on this one, um, go ahead, but, um, yeah, definitely a good, good read.

[00:19:36] Um, and then I guess, do you want to just get the other one out of the way? Get, get these all done. We can just go through the list as it is. It's fine. All right. So yeah. Deep trouble too. Um, they're talking about, yes, with the derp fish, obviously one of our roasts of Tim. Um, that was my, that's one of my least favorite Tim arts. Don't get me wrong.

[00:20:04] The background, everything is phenomenal. It's just the, the fish, the way he looks at you. And he's head on straight on with, with derp fish. And, uh, yeah, it's really funny. Cause if you ever go see Tim in person and go to his panel, he does a, like how he makes a goosebumps book. And what does he use for the example? Could be anything from the haunted maps to night living dummy. No, he uses deep trouble too.

[00:20:34] So he likes to mention that I, I don't like this one. And just, you know, it's a derp fish. Yeah. He likes to, he likes to think he's getting some ribs and I'm like, Tonya, I'm not the only one. I bet you there's tons of people out there that don't can't, can't go by with this derp fish, bro. Yep. But I like the deep trouble series as a whole. Um, I think the characters are interesting and obviously it does give that summer vibe with the whole bit with the fish and the oceans.

[00:21:03] And I mean, even the covers, I mean, even if that's a goldfish, um, you know, but you got a shark on the first one that gives you that jaws vibe, you know, I'm sure that's what Tim was going for with the hammerhead shark. I'm pretty sure that's what was the shark on the cover for deep trouble. And, you know, you got that swimmer view from the bottom underneath the water. So, I mean, you get a lot of good vibes from that, but I definitely like deep trouble one more than two. Not sure if that's a hot take or not.

[00:21:33] There are a lot of people that seem to like two, but I think I like even the episode of the episode, I just feel like maybe that's why. And, uh, you know, we have, we've had, uh, Todd Fennell on here who was in that episode and really cool guy. We're hoping to get Laura Vandervoort on here too, and maybe get them both on here together and have a deep trouble reunion. Uh, cause they're still in contact with each other. It's just trying to get them with their schedules the way they are.

[00:22:04] It's crazy. Yeah. So trying though, but that said, I mean, I, I think I would take deep trouble one over two, even with the episode, even though the episode was just titled deep trouble, which I thought was weird. Yeah. It's based on the second book. I feel like they didn't want to go with the derp fish. Um, they did the first. Well, no.

[00:22:33] Well, I don't know. Maybe I was going to say maybe it was budget constraints, but they were starting to use more like CGI towards the end. Yeah. So I think they probably could have came up with even ugly or derpy fish if they really wanted to, but maybe it was just more of the underwater stuff. They couldn't have gotten done as well. Cause even in the episode, um, they didn't quite spend too much time underwater.

[00:23:01] It was more like on land or in cave or something. So yeah, I haven't watched the episode in a while either because it wasn't one of my favorites. I mean, I have been going back and watching the episodes I haven't watched in a minute though. Cause they are, I mean, we mentioned they were going to be on Paramount plus, but you can also find it on Tubi, uh, YouTube. Like it is out there. I mean, if you want to watch it and you don't have Paramount plus, um, even Netflix still has the specials.

[00:23:31] So if you just want to watch the specials and Netflix still has those, they just don't have every episode anymore, which is stupid. Um, but I would say, yeah, I mean, I still think it's a good summer read, but there's others on this list. I would hold way higher for sure. Or deep trouble too, even. So with that, what's our next one? Goosebumps horror land. Welcome to camp slither.

[00:23:57] Um, so this one is one of the later horror land books, uh, number nine in the series. And it follows Boone and Heather as they are going to a summer camp, um, about, and there's like a legend of a man eating snake and, uh, people kind of start turning into snakes. Their skin starts peeling, uh, and they start shedding and that kind of stuff. So, uh, kind of an interesting read. It's again, it's been a while since I've read a lot of these.

[00:24:26] Um, but I do remember, uh, picking this one up just because of the cover. Like, I don't know. I don't know how you feel about that one, but I love the snake on there. I was reading these kind of around the time of Indiana Jones, like when, when Indiana Jones was really popular. So him being freaked out by snakes made me freaked out by snakes. So. Wasn't, I mean, Indiana Jones is always popular. Yeah. I guess.

[00:24:56] Well, I guess whenever my version of him being popular is like whenever I was like eight to nine, like around the time crystal skull came out. I was going to say, isn't that when that like terrible kingdom of the crystal skull came I liked it. So bad. Dude. I liked it. I'll defend it until the day I die. I liked it. Oh, well, that's a, that's a, that's a disappointment. I don't know if I can take your movie taste into account. The crystal skull was so good.

[00:25:23] I saw anything dial of destiny because of how bad kingdom of the crystal skull. Okay. Okay. I will say dial of destiny is light years better than crystal skull. Like I put it up with Raiders. Raiders is still the best one. In my opinion, for sure. That's almost even debatable. Like so many love the last crusade. You do have your temple of doom fans, but I do feel that's the weakest of the three. I would disagree. I would put last crusade at the bottom.

[00:25:53] That's surprising. Like I really enjoyed last crusade. Yeah. I did not like last crusade. I liked temple of doom, um, loved crystal skull. And I loved, uh, Raiders and dial of destiny is good. It's definitely up there. I don't like last crusade, but love kingdom of coastal soul. You've heard it here folks. Like I will defend it. I will defend it. You can clip it. You can clip it and call me out five years later. I'll still defend it.

[00:26:22] Jesus. But yeah, welcome to camp slither. Uh, if you, if you've not been into the horror land series, definitely a good one. Um, obviously you're going to miss some stuff because if you're reading the horror land section, um, the horror land sections are pretty quick to get through. So if you just want to read through the horror land sections, you're going to miss context from the book itself. Um, but it'll catch you up to speed with what you need to know to read this one.

[00:26:50] Um, so yeah, I, I enjoyed this one. I enjoyed the whole horror land series, like I said before. So definitely good. Again, that's one I haven't read because it came out later with the horror land series, but I like the name, although it gives me more Harry Potter vibes with the name. Camp Slytherin. Camp Slytherin.

[00:27:20] But it does lead into the next one, which we go right back to Billy and Sheena. Deep Trouble. We'll get these out of the way. Although I like to cover way more. Yes, the cover on this one is much better than, uh, Deep Trouble 2. Um, obviously this one's the first one in the series. Um, so in order, you're going to have Deep Trouble, Deep Trouble 2, and Creep from the Deep. So if you're wanting to read them all completely in order, that is the order to read them in. Um, but yeah, this one I read one time.

[00:27:49] Don't remember much about it, but since Creep from the Deep 2 and Creep from the Deep, or, uh, not Creep from the Deep 2, since Deep Trouble 2 and Creep from the Deep are on the list, this one had to go on there. So. I don't know. Um, I would say if we ended up doing, uh, like our own individual list, it's actually one that probably wouldn't even be on. None of the Deep Troubles, honestly, would be on my list. Really?

[00:28:19] Um, but again, that's a personal preference. Uh, it's mostly because I don't think the stories in general are all that great. They're fine. Uh, it's really just the, the cover for Deep Trouble, even Deep Trouble 2, even though it's not my favorite. It's still a solid cover, Tim. I know you're not watching this, so I can say that confidently without giving you any kind of props in real life. Um, but I mean, it's a Caribbean summer.

[00:28:47] You got the whole ocean bit, you got the biologist uncle and all the other stuff. And I mean, it's just, it's, it's solid as the story goes, I guess, you know, it's just not, I don't think, I don't know. I didn't find that one totally tied together. Um, I would prefer something like Ghost Beach, even though a lot of people don't like the episode. I still think the book's really good. Yep. Uh, personally. And the cover's sick. Like, I love the cover.

[00:29:14] And that is one of the Tots figures coming out next year. I know. I'm so excited. I didn't think they were going to do it. I was like, I don't know how they're going to do it, but I am so excited for that because they did Scarecrow walks at midnight and, but they didn't do it like how the Tim's cover art is. They, they gave him hands and feet and stuff so he could kind of be on his own. You can't really see if he has feet on Tim's, but he didn't really have hands.

[00:29:40] They kind of based it on like the, um, the Scarecrow, like mascot that they used. Yeah. The, the stuff they found on merch back in the day is what they seem to base it on. Kind of the similar with, um, well, shoot. What's the, what's the other one that's coming out in the new one that the horror, the horror

[00:30:07] was kind of, kind of an off design because obviously on the cover it was, he was behind a sign. How are you really going to do that as a figure? But, um, so it's interesting. I'm, I'm, I'm looking forward to all that, but deep trouble. I don't know. Like I would still go with ghost beach and I am, I'm going to die on that hill. If you're going to die on the hill for Keenum of the Coastal Skull, which is an absurd hill to die on. Uh, I, I will at least go to bat for ghost beach.

[00:30:34] Uh, as far as the summer read goes, I, I think it's a good book. That's on the, that's the next one on the list. So speech. Oh, well, there you go. Uh, definitely one. I thought you had. Oh, okay. So no, it's not on that list originally. No, no. So, um, return to ghost camp was on my honorable mentions and I, I kind of switched that around. So, um, ghost beach is next on the list.

[00:31:04] Obviously, uh, definitely a good read, uh, base of the episodes based on the book. Um, not as good of an episode as you've already stated, but kind of just learning about. You think the episode's funny? Oh yeah. The, the skeleton dog. Skeleton dog. Well, I mean, you know, the, the skeleton of the dog on the beach was so horribly bad and it's like, wow. Okay.

[00:31:31] But then obviously the, you know, they tried to like the, do the skull on the faces of the characters, but it's, it's the fact that these kids go to visit, not their grandparents, their cousins. And their cousins are like 80. Yeah. Like you're like 12 years old, but your cousins are 80 something years old. Okay.

[00:31:56] And how do you parents send you to this, these people knowing like they're dead now? Yeah. Or if they don't know, how do they not know? Like what? It's like, Oh my God. And then of course the ending, it's like, Oh Jesus. I was like, okay. They're dead the whole time too. It's like, Oh, come on. It's like, they looked dead already. You didn't have to say that probably.

[00:32:24] I mean, but yeah, anyway, I thought that whole thing was hilarious. I mean, it's kind of like for me, uh, an old story. Yeah. Like people don't like that episode, but I find it hilarious. The concept of weird. I won't lie to you. It's weird. Pimping out, pimping out her nephew and his friend to her old golden girlfriends. Yep. Hilarious. But yeah.

If you haven't read this one yet. Uh, if you want to get summer read, I know some of them on here. I say, isn't a good summer read, but I mean, you could find it as a good summer read. This is 10. We are, we are suggesting this is not a.

[00:33:20] My list or his list was just, we suggest. So combined here. So these are just our opinions folks. Okay. I'm going to throw it out there. Yes. Come at me. Come at me in the chat. [00:33:45] When it's 102 and Nick is struggling to breathe because he's sweating so much through his clothes. He does not want your input on what book he should be reading at the moment. He wants you to bring him a fan and a nice glass of water. And I want you to hose me down. And I want it to be like that scene where I don't even know what's from, but everybody knows the scene.

[00:34:11] And, but it's that one where that chicks in the chair and they like pull a rope and all that water comes down. Yeah, no, that's me. That's what needs to be me. It is hot. Yes, it is hot. Next on the list. When you're fat, it's worse. Oh, it is worse, dude. It is worse. Ghost Camp. So this one, good read. Number 45 in the original 62.

[00:34:41] Harry and his brother Alex are dying to fit in at Camp Spirit Moon. But the camp has so many weird traditions like the goofy camp salute, the odd camp greeting, and the way old campers love to play jokes on the new campers. The jokes start to get really serious, really creepy, really scary. First, a girl sticks her arm in a campfire. Then a boy jams a pole through his foot. Still, they're just jokes, right? So, good read.

[00:35:09] I read this one a couple times as a kid just because of the cover. Like, I'm telling you, like, it's what we always talk about with these covers is, like, they attract you in and get you to really read them. So, Tim did an excellent job with this. You know, the girl looking back at the – or looking forward at the ghosts walking through. So, good read. Yeah, it's a cover that sticks with you.

[00:35:37] Like, I – it's one I never forget. You know, you can tell me in Ghost Camp and I can see that cover as clear as I can. The Haunted Mask or Night and Terror Tower. You know, any of Tim's book covers that he did for the original 62 or Series 2000. I mean, they're really stuck in there. And even the ones that he didn't do are stuck in there. Like, stay out of the basement and be careful what you wish for.

[00:36:05] Just really good art for the time. Something I feel is missing from a lot of stuff today. Because not a lot – I'll notice, like, when I go to Half Price Books or Barnes & Noble or something, there's not really – I don't really go in there and see, like, a cover or anything that really grabs at me like those did when I was a kid. I'm not really sure why that is, though. Like, maybe it was just a product of the time. Maybe it was my age. Which – I don't know. No books really do that for me anymore, though.

[00:36:35] Yep. Not like Goosebumps did. But Ghost Camp is actually one of Stein's better stories. It is. And I loved going to camp when I was younger. And I camp to this day when it's not 1,000 degrees outside because I'm not an idiot unless I'm in a cabin. People that tent camp in this weather, good Lord, I don't know how you do it. But I had friends do that with me once, man. Forget it. Never again. I couldn't sleep.

[00:37:05] It's like 1,000 degrees at 7 o'clock in the morning. I mean, are you kidding me right now? Mosquitoes and hell outside. And that's why the bugs love it. Yep. It lit up by some mosquitoes. Just imagine that's what hell is. It's just really hot with bugs. Like, that's hell. So it's hell on earth in summertime. Yep. Let you live in a really good place where it's not too hot, not too cold.

[00:37:34] You tell me where that is down below and I'll move there. I'll come join you. But, I mean, it does have a really good premise, you know, when the brothers, like, figure out, like, the whole camp as just ghosts who are trying to get their bodies. It's a really good story. So if you're looking for a good summertime, ghost camp is a great one.

[00:38:00] Like, I said that really weird, but I like ghost camp. But still, it's a good one. I do recommend this one quite highly. As we kind of go down the list here, even, like, the ones that I'm seeing on here, to me, they just get better. And I think a lot of you would agree. They've been in our top tens before of favorite books.

[00:38:25] But as we're in summer now and sweating and dying, we just wanted you all to kick back, relax with lemonade, and read the next book that's on the list. And that's one day at Horrorland. One day at Horrorland. Holy cow. How can you hate this? You can't do it. It's so good. It's so good. Honestly, okay. So, obviously, Bjorn is slappy. You are haunted mask. Horrorland is me.

[00:38:54] I love Horrorland. And I think it's just because, like, I grew up with the Horrorland series kind of coming out and getting released. And so I just naturally fell in love with every book that came out pertaining to Horrorland. Even though the Horrorland series retcons it, I will put in another honorable mention, Return to Horrorland. It technically is not summer. I think it's fall because it's taking place six months after.

[00:39:23] I would say it's fall. But, yeah, both books are equally as good. And Return to Horrorland is honestly scary. Like, even as an adult reading it, there's the dentist office or whatever that they go to. And that freaked the hell out of me when I was reading that. Yeah. If you're not afraid of dentists already, that'll know. Yeah, for sure it'll get you. Because they never really tell you, like, they kind of hint that they're robots. Like, that they're not actually kids getting tortured. But I would disagree.

[00:39:53] I feel like they were actually ripping teeth out of kids, you know? Yeah, I'm feeling that they were actual kids. Like, I don't know if I believe that they're robots. And I say that in a full knowing well that, like, Series 2000 was meant to be for older audience. Not fully adults, but teenagers can handle a lot of horror, even at that time.

[00:40:17] Like, the 80s and 90s were chocked full of, like, teen horror that, you know, they freaking loved. You know, you had still from 78, you had Michael Myers. Still had movies coming out. Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Chucky, all your iconic horror movie villains. You know, teenagers were watching all that stuff. So, if that's the audience they're trying to reach, I think they're actual kids. That's the thing, though.

[00:40:42] Like, you don't see a lot of media actually going and attacking or killing kids. Yeah. Maybe because it's too much for some people. Yeah. But I kind of like when books or, like, TV or movies kind of go that route. Because it shows you no one is truly safe. Yeah.

[00:41:01] If a kid can be killed in a book or a movie or whatever in a pretty horrific way, I'm going to say no one's safe and this is going to be a ride. Yeah. For sure. Yeah. I hate going to the dentist to this day still. I'm an adult, folks. Still hate going to the dentist. Yeah. The whole Horrorland little miniseries.

[00:41:28] You got Horrorland, Return to Horrorland, and then obviously the whole multiverse universe. Yeah. Saga. Whatever you want to call it. One Day in Horrorland. Obviously amusement parks, rides, carnivals, that kind of stuff. That's all happening in the summer. So if you really want to freak yourself out, read this book. Read Return to Horrorland. And then go to Six Flags or something like that. You know? Yeah. It's fair time. It's your local fair. Yeah.

[00:41:58] Yeah. Just think about all the rides in this book and what you get to experience when you go to your local fair. Yep. Or amusement park or what have you that's near you because I don't know where you live. But, you know, near me we have, I don't know if we have a Six Flags near us anymore. We might. Kentucky used to have one. Ours is called Worlds of Fun. I've heard of Worlds of Fun. Yep. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun. We have Kings Island. We have Kings Island in Ohio.

[00:42:27] Little note is that if you watch The Last of Us HBO show, in season one, there's a whole arc where they go to Kansas City. Um, they actually filmed here for that. So they filmed, um, me and my wife kind of went out whenever, uh, they were filming and found exactly where they lined up the shot for it.

[00:42:51] Um, but there is a, uh, a red roller coaster that you'll see that is Worlds of Fun. Um, and it was shot like down from an angle. There's like a hill, um, and they were driving on this, this road that's on the hill to get the shot that they got. So it's, it is cool just to see my hometown featured in there. Uh, I go to Worlds of Fun all the time. So, uh, obviously carnivals and amusement parks and stuff growing up around one, uh,

[00:43:20] Horland was for sure my favorite. Yeah. It's, it's a fan favorite for sure. I think a lot of these coming up that we're about to mention, I would say are, are fan favorites. Cause like, of course we talk about like Stein had some stinker books. Okay. The covers might've been great, but he did have some stinker books. He even admits to having stinker books. One of them being cry of the cat, which I think is hilarious. Cause I actually really liked that book. I liked cry of the cat. Yeah. Yeah. I actually really liked that book. I thought it was a great start to series 2000.

[00:43:50] And then you got bride living dummy. Uh, yeah. So, I mean, it started off fantastic. Um, but you listen to him tell the story and it's like, Oh, that's terrible. That was a terrible book. I love it. I don't know. I don't understand that at all. But anyway, um, one day at horror lands, a classic though. I mean the episode, if you really don't want to read and you want to come inside, you can kind of get a glimpse of what the story is, but honestly, they couldn't go much into

[00:44:19] the detail with the rides and everything because of budget constraints. I will say you get more of the world building with the book, but I personally will defend the episode. I liked it. It, it brought, I read the book before I saw the episode. So it brought everything that I was imagining in my head to life. And I was able to picture everything else that was in horror land around there. Does that make sense?

[00:44:46] Like I was able to figure out kind of where some of the rides and attractions would be with the show having put that into perspective. Like even today, when I read through horror land, um, like the whole, the whole thing, all of horror land, I still imagine it being in the nineties show park. So if that gives you perspective on it is that it's, if you look at the episode, yeah, there's

[00:45:14] not a lot there because they can't build out an amusement park in the middle of a forest. Um, but if you imagine it with everything that you're getting in the book and in all of the world building they did with the horror land series, it's worth the watch, worth the watch for sure. I mean, it's the nineties show. I think it's worth a watch anyway, even though, even though the nineties show even had its fair share of stinkers too. Don't get me wrong. It wasn't perfect folks.

[00:45:44] Uh, and if you're a Goosebumps fan, you know that all too well, you know, talking about like teacher's pet, that was pretty rough. Uh, even cry the cat. It was decent. That's kind of rough in parts. Um, although the, the mutated cat mom was terrifying. That was terrifying. Yeah. I'll give a props for that. Um, but I mean, you still get your stinkers here and there with that show.

[00:46:10] Even to me, like I, I have said this on here before, but I still think, uh, the, the, the trilogy is mediocre at best. Yeah. I know I was never a fan of trilogy. I wasn't either because like, again, I grew up when the show came out. So when they started airing those episodes, I'm like this, what is this? It's like, what book is this from? Like, Oh, it's not. As I find out later, I'm just like, well, this is stupid.

[00:46:40] I was like, what? All these books you could be doing, but you haven't done yet. And you're trying to make something original for the show. Come on, man. It doesn't help that, uh, it was using the monster blood cover too. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, yeah, I don't know. I, I just, and now don't get me wrong. I do think like the monster baseball was cool. There are, there are cool elements from it.

[00:47:06] And the whole, uh, when she got turned to a pig, that was, that was pretty cool. Like that's pretty good effects. Um, it had its moments, but overall, I just, I never was into it just because it wasn't a book. I mean, even, even some of the ones on there, like go eat worms that aren't the best, at least it was based on a book. Right. And I could actually get behind that because it, again, like you were talking about it

[00:47:31] visually brought that to the surface for me, but one day at horror land, I wish, you know, Disney plus would have done it justice, but they click baited us title. Um, and really, we only have the 90 show if you want something visual, but if you're a reader, that's a good summer read for sure. A hundred percent. Next up on the list is curse of camp. Yeah. Yeah. This one.

[00:48:02] Yeah. It's a good one. Cover alone is sick. Yeah. All over alone. A hundred percent. This is in like top 10, maybe top five covers for me. Yeah. It's really, really good. And honestly, like I know it's not gory in its own right, but I'm actually really surprised that they let Tim do a cover that creepy. Yeah. Yep. Because I mean, don't get me wrong.

[00:48:31] Like six, the original six, two, they all had really good art, but they were never, even the haunted mask. I love it. And it is creepy in a, in its own way. But I mean, when you look at that image though, it's just a hair away from being a series 2000 cover. I mean, that's not too many changes off to be that. So it basically just went right under the radar, but another camp story, Stein loves his camp stories.

[00:49:01] It is a, uh, it, I think it's one of the, again, one of Stein's better written books. Uh, there are, there's a lot of talk about him having ghost writers at a certain point in the career of the 62 and beyond. And, uh, with how many books he was having to put out at the time, cause they were releasing one a month, obviously he was writing them about six months in advance, but then you also had time for, you had to have the editing time, the publishing time, Tim's art, that whole thing.

[00:49:30] Uh, there's a process to putting a book out. So as we're all aware, um, but it's just really one of those things, like I can believe Stein wrote this one. This one felt to me more like a fear street and some of his earlier stuff with goosebumps, like dead house. That was a little more scary and not as, not as goofy. Yeah. Not as goofy as he kind of made some of his other stories. Uh, Stein likes his humor.

[00:49:59] Don't get me wrong. And, you know, I've met him in person a few times and, and hung out with him and all that stuff when, when talking to him and it's just, he's got a dry sense of humor and he's funny and he likes to be funny. Uh, he's just really good at writing scary though. That's the funny part about that. The irony, I suppose. Um, but I will say, uh, this one. Yeah.

[00:50:27] Like, I don't want to spoil anything for you, but let me just tell you, it's, it's creepy. Um, the, obviously the concept is like, you know, she didn't want to go to this camp. Uh, I think if I remember right, she was forced to go to this camp. Um, I'm trying to remember as much about as I can, but, uh, you know, she hates camp cold lake. It's gross. I know she doesn't want to be there. Yeah. Uh, I remember her, uh, like the bunk mates.

[00:50:54] I can't remember their names, but tease her and stuff like that, but which also made her not like it. So some people can probably relate to some of the story that is in there as well. If you ever went to a summer camp, um, but it's the ghost aspect, you know, it's like, Oh, I, you know, this is just one internal buddy. Why don't you stay down here with me? Uh, in the watery depths of cold lake. No, I'm good. I'm good, bro.

[00:51:24] So, but it's good. Uh, that's all I'll say about that is a, as a good one. So I don't want to spoil anything though. So we'll, we'll go on to the next one on the list. And again, we are not counting down. Like these are not top 10, but welcome to camp nightmare. Absolute classic. Classic fan favorite. Yes. So good. The, both the book and the show are amazing.

[00:51:54] So, um, yeah, I mean, obviously do you feel like we can spoil it? Cause most people know about it. I kind of feel like you can with this one because this one was an episode also. Yeah. Unlike cold lake, which I really wish was an episode. That would have been so free. That would have been sick. Um, but, uh, you know, this one, I feel like you can spoil because the episode was very similar. Yeah. To the book. Yeah.

[00:52:21] I mean, uh, the screenplay that Dan and Billy wrote for a lot of the nineties episodes, some were better than the books, but this one was a lot of the 90s. One was pretty spot on to the book in my opinion. Yeah, for sure. This one, I think we, I think we can. Yeah. I don't see why not. So obviously you got Billy, uh, going to the camp and, uh, the whole story kind of sums

[00:52:46] up with, uh, the camp is not on earth and it is an actual, it's actually like a military camp for them to go to earth. They're aliens, uh, trying to help him train to be able to handle the, the travel and all that kind of stuff. So you got campers disappearing and trying to solve problems and, and figure out what's going on. Um, campers drowning, all that kind of stuff.

[00:53:14] So, uh, it is an excellent, excellent book. Excellent episode too. Again, it's one of those things like horror land. It gives you a reference and a visual, um, to what you're, you're reading and seeing. So definitely a good one. Yeah. I'd say this is one you, if you've read before revisit, uh, for your summer read or recommend to somebody who maybe hasn't read it. Yeah. And recommend us too, while you're at it, you know, like subscribe clicky here, you know, it's all free.

[00:53:44] It's good. Right. Free is, uh, but free is good. Uh, but I mean, what, what, I mean, what a story though. I mean, it is one of the better psychological thrillers and we've talked about this before and this episode with Kyle Erickson, who was in the, the 90 show episode who played Billy. Uh, we're hoping to get some others, uh, from that episode. Particularly Larry, uh, because I just think that character of Larry is fricking hilarious

[00:54:13] and is like, so, so good at making you hate him. It's kind of scary. Like how much you really hate his character. And then at the end, he's like, well, way to go, Billy. Just playing bro. But now you're like, I kind of want to chill with this dude. Like I wanted to slit your throat a minute ago, but here we are. Uh, it's, it's actually, uh, I love it. It's just the fact that like, yeah, campers go missing. He knows them, but everybody starts playing.

[00:54:43] Like, who are you talking about? We've never had anybody at this camp by that name. You know, they all disappear in mysterious ways. And uncle Al being the really creepy, you know, camp guide counselor guy. The guy that got to play uncle Al was so good at it, man. Oh, I hate that he passed away, dude. Cause he like, when we started podcast and we were talking about who we wanted to interview, he was on my top 10. Yeah. And I found out he passed away.

[00:55:13] I'm like, Oh, it sucks so bad, man. Cause he nailed it. Like it was so good, dude. You, he made you at times feel like your buddy, like your best friend. And then when he could flip that switch too. And then he kind of gave up a creepy vibe that I got from him was like a teacher when you get in trouble and like that fear that you feel as a child, when like you have this really friendly teacher who's always there.

[00:55:41] And then she comes into the classroom one day and she's just pissed and you know, she's pissed. That's the vibe that I got from uncle Larry in both the book and the episode. Uncle Larry, uncle Al, uncle Al. Yes. Uncle Al, uncle Al. Yes. Uncle Larry. Yeah. Well, you know, since uncle Al passed away, maybe now it is uncle Larry. Maybe he's running the camp now. I don't know. It might be.

[00:56:08] Who's running, who's running this military facility now. We'll see. Maybe it's Billy, but that's one thing too. Like, yeah, that, that ending was quite a bit of a shocker. Although it always made me question the episode, like how can they see earth from there? Yeah. Yeah. I don't know what planet they're on. Like what, what planet would you be on? Are you on Mars? If so, like, how is it that we as earthlings haven't discovered life yet on Mars?

[00:56:36] Unless you're just technology wise, you can just cloak yourself, I guess. But yeah, I don't know. It was very interesting. It was very interesting. And it made a lot of sense why like a lot of their animals and surroundings and everything was all earth based because they were training for scientists to go to earth. So that's interesting. So that's interesting. But yeah, it was a really fantastic episode and it's just as good as a book. Yes.

[00:57:05] So yeah, this was one I was all on board for, for a summer, a summer scare story to read. Because even Saber, love Saber, even though it gets all cross-eyed in the episode at times. Yeah. But as we learned now, that's a mechanical issue because there's a reused prop Ron had from something else that he worked with. Well, Horland came later. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:57:35] Well, it depends. When do they shoot it though? Well, Cam Nightmare was season one. Horland was three. Like two or three. Two or three. Yeah. I mean, it came way later after Nightmare. Mm-hmm. So they did reuse Saber later just to get some use out of them. Mm-hmm. Yeah. I can't recommend that one enough.

[00:57:59] And before we go on to the next one, you know, all these are just our opinions, like we've said. But, I mean, I do think even if it's one I haven't read, but Hayden has, you know, like the Horland series ones. Or ones I wouldn't have normally put on a list, like Deep Trouble. I think they're fine. Maybe you love them. I'm not going to knock it. I don't know.

[00:58:27] But, again, if you have a different book we haven't mentioned that you really like for a summer read, yeah, just drop it below. We'd like to see what it is, you know. We do read comments. I do plan on reading some of these. When, Nick, when you brought up the idea to do this as an episode, I was like, yeah, I kind of do need to go and read some of these during the summertime. So I definitely will be picking up a couple. Especially when you're locked in the house because it's a million degrees outside. Mm-hmm.

[00:58:57] You know, don't be just a couch potato. Yeah. Read a book, man. Read a book. Mm-hmm. Or watch the 90s show, whichever. Whatever. I mean, both are good. But it leads us to our number one. Yes. This one. Number one. Welcome to Nightmare. Oh, my goodness gracious. The Horror at Camp Jelly Jam. I got, like, four different titles there. The Horror at Camp Jelly Jam. I was going to say, I think you just stroked out.

[00:59:27] I honestly about did. Um, the Horror at Camp Jelly Jam, in my opinion. Uh, Nick, again, when you brought up the idea to do this, this was the first book on my, like, immediately whenever I thought about it. Um, this obviously always is going to scream summer camp, summer vibes to me. Um, just dealing with a weird, gross, jelly king who smells bad, and that's the way that he gets defeated.

[00:59:54] Uh, it is, it is such a strange and eerie book. I mean, obviously we're not ranking these, but it's, like, in my opinion, like, the perfect culmination of, like, the humor element and then the scary element as well. Is that it's such an absurd monster, but it's also terrifying at the same time. So, yeah, this one for sure had to be on the list.

[01:00:25] Yeah, this one is Bjorn's favorite, and, you know, for good reason. I mean, it's one, I love the cover. You know, we've said that before on a lot of other things, too, but, I mean, like, Tim's covers were fire. So, what are you going to do? And I don't know why this one sticks out so much for a lot of people other than the cover. Because a lot of people are like, what is that? And believe it or not, that's Tim. That's Tim on the cover. Yep.

[01:00:54] He posed for it and everything. There's a photo out there. Look it up. Uh, and it's goofy as shit, but I love it. And he, uh, he posed for that, but then it does, again, it's his art, but then the story does really drive it home. Yeah. And this is another one that Stein, I feel, like, did a really good job with. Again, he loves his camp stories. And this one's no exception.

[01:01:21] It was like, again, you don't really see King Jelly Jam until roughly the end, if I remember right. But it still didn't matter. Like, the rest of it's really, really good. A lot of it's like the counselors. The counselors are so creepy. Yeah. That keeps you involved. It does give you that creepy counselor vibe like Camp Nightmare had. Mm-hmm.

[01:01:49] The difference is, like, yeah, I mean, they stayed creepy the whole time, I felt like, in this one compared to Nightmare, where, you know, Larry was just a douche. And Uncle Al was trying to be your friend most of the time, until he wasn't. But that said, I mean, what's not to love about going to camp in the summer? You know what I mean? A lot of people love it. Some people hate it. Some people get homesick. Some people never went, which I feel bad if he didn't.

[01:02:19] Which I get, because I rarely ever got to go. But that was mostly because, you know, I'm poor. I grew up poor. Adult poor. I'm just poor or broke, whatever you want to say. You know, I'm that. So I rarely got to go to camp. But, I mean, like the people who did, I think you can relate a lot to these camp stories. Yeah. With the exception of the giant monsters, of course. But you could always make that up, too.

[01:02:48] Because you have camp stories around a fire. Or tell them at night when you're supposed to be asleep. You know, you and your buddies got flashlights in here. Told them up like, and then I went outside. And there's my wife. It scares the shit out of you, right? She does, too. She does. I'm not married, but I've heard wives are scary. I love her. I love her to death. Don't ever want to love anybody else in my life. But, yeah.

[01:03:18] She can be, she can be a little devil at times. And she knows that. She takes pride in it. Women be scary. Women be scary. So, I mean, these are just, again, stories we can recommend if you're looking for a good summer read. Because we are in the height of summer now, as July is here. Fourth of July upon us. 250th anniversary. I don't recall if there's actually any Goosebumps stories around the Fourth of July.

[01:03:48] I did look it up because I was going to make a post about it. I don't think there is. Like, there may be one that takes place in July. But I don't remember anything specifically about, like, the Fourth. Yeah. I was going to say, I'm sure there's some that might mention July that I'm forgetting. But, I mean, it's Fourth of July, though. That, I don't think there's ever been one by Stein. Which, I mean, I kind of get, I guess. But he's had other ones that kind of hinted around other holidays outside of Halloween.

[01:04:18] So, I guess I never really thought about it. But I guess he hasn't really done one Fourth of July. Nope. Maybe that should have been a Curly story. Yeah. I mean, I don't know if there's any in the Tales to Give You Goosebumps. That one, I haven't really read much of those. But there could be. There could be something in there that's about the Fourth. [01:04:44] But I will say Tales to Give You Goosebumps is a good segue. Because guess what? That's, I think, the title we're going to go with. I do believe so. Like for our new segment. I mean, we'll say it in that episode, too, before we start anything. It'll be spoilers. It's not spoiler-free. I mean, it'll be a free-range talk. Because, let's face it, like we give spoilers out here left and right because we figured you've seen it by now or watched it because we're so used to it because these things are 30 years old. Yeah. But Obsession's relatively new, so we kind of feel we kind of need to put that

While we swelter away in the summer, we now have given you an ample list of different books that you can read for yourself if you haven't. And if you have, maybe revisit them. You'll find they're pretty good still, even to this day, 30-plus years later.
